Period underwear is an appealing option for menstruating bodies for a variety of reasons. Not only are period undies a much more sustainable option than your typical one-use pad and tampon options, but they’re also more convenient for many folks. Instead of needing to swap out a pad, tampon or even a menstrual cup, changing period undies is as easy as just changing your underwear.

These period panties are designed to be worn without tampons or pads (though you can always use them together and think of your period panties as an extra safeguard against leakage), and soak up menstrual blood while still keeping you as dry as possible. It’s essentially like a diaper, but reusable, without the bulk, and meant to keep you feeling dry.
Period panties have been around for a while — since before World War I, but these earlier versions were made of waterproof rubber, which offered leakproof protection, but wasn’t very breathable or sanitary. The newer versions (aka everything in this list) now utilize several layers of fabric to lock in moisture while simultaneously keeping you dry. Menstrual underwear is even more mainstream among consumers with brands like Thinx marketing their products to millennials, who might otherwise have missed the century-old WWI-era of underwear galoshes. If you’re looking for a brief (lol) intro to period panties, here’s a rundown of some of the best known products and brands worth trying.
1. RubyLove Seamless
For a really thin, panty-line-free design, RubyLove’s Seamless undies offer the same protection of 2.5 tampons worth of absorbency in an ultra thin design. Ruby Love is also cool because they offer less-feminine designs for men’s boyshorts or boxer briefs as well.
2. Rael Period Underwear
While Rael started out with feminine hygiene products like tampons and pads, they’ve recently expanded to skincare as well. So if you’re already a fan of the brand’s bestselling zit stickers, it may be worth looking into their period undies too. They come in multipacks of two or four and are made of 95% organic cotton with 5% spandex. I’ve tried these personally and while they’re fine, I do find that the sizing on them tends to run a bit small, so buy a size up if you’re going to get these.
3. Sustain
Sustain’s period undies are more cottony than some of the other quick-drying options like Thinx, and I have personally worn them and can attest to them being amaze. They come in only one style and colorway, so if you’re not about black bikinis, you’re outta luck.
4. Ruby Love Hipster
If you want some undies that won’t pinch your skin, Ruby Love has one of the most convincing product images we’ve ever seen with its über-stretchy waistband. Definitely clutch for days when you’re bloated AF. Another bonus: You have the option of choosing the kind of undies (bikini, high-waist, hipster, brief) and so many pretty colors.
5. Modibodi
Australian brand Modibodi features a huge range of styles, fabrics, and fits for its period underwear, including maternity and swim styles. Its classic thongs hold half a tampon, while its heavier-duty bikinis hold up to two tampons’ worth of blood for overnight wear. Modibodi also makes underwear in girls’ sizes 8 to 14, so if you’re buying for a younger sister or daughter, these would be a good bet.
6. Knix
If you don’t need a full waterproof gusset but are looking for undies that won’t bleed through if you wear white pants and a tampon, Knix are great as an extra layer of protection. These undies are super thin, so again, you probs shouldn’t use them on their own, but if you just want something that’s more absorbent than your average cotton undies, these are great. They are also seamless and absorbent and feature a quick dry gusset.
7. RubyLove Set
If you have the cash to invest in a set of period panties to save up at once, this seven-pack from Ruby Love is one of the more affordable sets you can get. It’s still $99, but at $14 per panty, it’s way more economical than buying each separate underwear for $20 each.
8. ModiBodi Swim Bikini
If you’re like, Period panties are great—if only I could have some to wear with my bikinis, ModiBodi has you covered. It’s got a Sports Bikini Bottom you can buy individually for $34 or a one-piece swimsuit for $100.
9. Aisle (formerly known as Lunapads)
Aisle makes bikinis, hipsters, boxer briefs, and briefs, so you’ve got a few style and comfort options depending on your personal preference. These also come with a “booster” specific to Aisle undies, which you can tuck into a special pocket at the front and back of the gusset for double the period protection.
10. Thinx
Probably the most recognizable brand is Thinx. The company first made headlines when Thinx claimed its subway ads were rejected by the NYC subway’s advertising partner. Its underwear come in a huge variety of options ranging from thongs to boy shorts to pretty much every size and cut in between. One thong holds up to half a tampon’s worth of blood, while its high-waist and hip-hugger styles hold up to two tampons’ worth. Also worth noting: Thinx came under some controversy earlier this year when an independent journalist discovered her Thinx undies contained PFAS, and while its current statement reads that they do not contain PFAS, buy at your own discretion. We also looked into the matter at the time and found that Sustain, Lunapads (now known as Aisle), and Ruby Love were the only undies that did not test positive for PFAS.
